the staff were very friendly. the hotel was situated right at the heart of the town's best beach/shopping/restaurant area the staff spoke very little english.they were constructing an extension two yards away from the main swimming pool

My fiancé and I stayed at Mercure from January 3-5, 2016. The beachfront location was outstanding. You are 30 seconds to the beach from the moment you exit the hotel. I usually don't read into these reviews much because I think most people are overly angry when they don't need to be. But this was a very subpar trip and so I am posting a negative review for the first time. We arrived in our room and everything seemed to be satisfactory at that point. We went to the beach and returned a few hours later, and from that point on our room smelled like smoke throughout the rest of the trip. We tried to have breakfast the next day, which we thought was including but was not. (This may have been our fault for not realizing it.) However, my fiancé said that at check-in we were told breakfast went through 11AM. We arrived at 10:15AM, and were turned away as breakfast stopped at 10AM. I left the Do Not Disturb sign on our room because we were only there two days and would not need new towels or any cleaning in the room. While we were gone, the maid entered anyway. She took our bath towels and replaced them with the rough pool towels. But I am really angry at the principle that the maid entered the room while the Do Not Disturb sign was on anyway! This is ridiculous! In addition, a lightbulb socket was left empty by the staff and a valve to open the window was loose. The A/C temperature could not be adjusted. There had been some leakage from the A/C at one time and the wood surrounding the A/C was warped. (These are more minor issues, but these issues should never be seen at a place that strives to be a four-star hotel.) We brought the issues to the attention of the woman who checked us out of the hotel. She made note of the issues. No discount was offered. At US $150, this was the most expensive hotel in town and I selected this one because I wanted to show my fiancé to have a four-star experience. We received a two-star experience and I should have booked my next choice for hotel, which would have been one-third of the price.
